Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes that Juan Mata can spearhead an end of season revival at Old Trafford.
The Spanish playmaker was the Red Devils’ only piece of January business, as they elected to break their transfer record to snap him up from Chelsea in a £37.1m deal.
Although he has been impressive in his opening few appearances, Mata has been unable to prevent United from disappointing on the field of play, with their weekend draw at home to bottom of the table Fulham a low point in what has been a frustrating campaign under David Moyes.
Scholes – who retired for the second time at the end of last season – feels that the Premier League champions were “very lucky” to have been able to sign a player of Mata’s abilities last month, and that he believes the midfielder can help to turn the club’s fortunes around over the coming months:
“For the last couple of years Mata has probably been the best player in the league,” he is quoted by the Daily Star.
“We had to pay a lot of money for him and we were very lucky that he wasn’t in Chelsea’s plans, and only we can benefit from him now.
“Hopefully he can have a strong end to the season and he can help us climb the table.”
