Sunday People.

The 17-year-old enjoyed his breakthrough into the SPL side’s first-team last year, and has been impressive for them ever since.

As an attacking midfielder with a low centre of gravity and sound technical ability, his skills have been lauded by the Dundee faithful, who have even compared him to Messi – who is widely thought of as the best player on the planet.

Gauld has been attracted tentative glances from sides such as Real Madrid of late, but United are also in the hunt.

David Moyes is thought to have had scouts watching the teenage prodigy, and could be ready to make an early offer to bring him south of the border.

Liverpool, Newcastle and Everton are also keen, but United are confident that the player could be convinced to move to Old Trafford ahead of any other suitors.

Dundee would like to keep their starlet, but are aware that there is little they can do as some of the continent’s elite clubs circle.

A bid of £5m is likely to be enough to convince them to sell Gauld, but they may insist on having the player loaned back for some time.

Can Ryan Gauld be a future star?

So “Dundee would like to keep their starlet”. I’m sure Dundee would – if they were ever, by some fluke, fortunate enough to have a player of Ryan Gauld’s calibre.

On the basis that you can’t even accurately name the leading Scottish Premiership (not SPL!) club that young Ryan continues to play for, such slipshod (or is it Hams-fisted?) journalism leads me to suspect that Gauld’s present performances may in fact be being presently tracked by Manchester City, Tranmere Rovers and Sunderland!
