Manchester United have opened talks with Sporting Lisbon about the possibility of signing William Carvalho, according to the Daily Mail.

David Moyes has identified the 21-year-old holding midfielder as a top transfer target, and the club have now registered their interest with Sporting.

The Portuguese club value the midfielder at around £29million, but United are hoping they can do a deal for £4million less.

But with Moyes desperate to avoid a repeat of the previous summer’s transfer window, United are looking to get deals done before the summer’s World Cup.

That means United may well be forced to meet Sporting’s valuation if they want to land the midfielder.

Meanwhile, Marouane Fellaini has escaped retrospective action for a high challenge on Claudio Yacob during the 3-0 win over West Brom on Saturday.

It is understood referee Jon Moss saw the incident during Saturday’s game, which means it cannot be referred to a video panel.

Had none of the officials witness the incident, then the FA would have had the option of referring it to a three-man panel of former referees, who would the review the incident and decide whether it was worthy of a sending off.
