Manchester United are ready to offer Antonio Valencia a new contract in the hope of avoiding losing him on the cheap, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Equador international has just 18 months left to run on his current deal, and is understood to be one of the club’s lowest earners.
Valencia appears to have improved his form after a slow start to the season, and was hailed for his performance in the 3-0 win over Aston Villa at the weekend by David Moyes.
There has been some speculation regarding his future, but Manchester United are adamant they want to keep him at Old Trafford.
The former Wigan man is one of the lowest paid players on United’s books, and is looking for a similar long term deal to the one offered to fellow wide man Nani in September.
United are aware they need to sort the contract soon to avoid a possible problem, while Moyes is also keen to strengthen his midfield options in January.
Valencia had previously been mentioned as one of the players who could be sold in the upcoming transfer window, but it appears his position in the squad is safe.
However, fellow wingers Nani and Ashely Young have both been linked with a possible move away from Old Trafford, with Moyes understood to have set his sights on a transfer for Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria.
