Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has backed Juan Mata to shine at Old Trafford once he has settled in.
The Spanish playmaker completed a shock £37.1m move to the Red Devils from Chelsea last month, and has been billed as the player to turn the club’s fortunes around after a difficult opening half of the season.
However, with Mata in the side United have only managed one win and have dropped points away to Stoke and at home to Fulham to all but end their title chances and put their ability to finish in the top four in serious doubt.
The ex-Blues ace has struck up a solid on-field relationship with Robin van Persie, but there have been some questioning whether or not he is the man to save the Premier League champions from a disappointing 2013/14.
Rooney feels that his new team-mate will need time, but that he will become an influential United player:
“It’s exciting, Juan has come in and it’s another world-class player to have in the squad.” He is quoted by the Daily Star.
“It’ll take time – it can always take a little bit of time for every player to gel and to bond but we really hope we can all start scoring goals and help the team be successful.”
