Bastian Schweinsteiger could leave Bayern Munich in the summer, according to former captain Olivier Kahn, reports the Daily Mail.
And the news is set to put Manchester United on red alert, as they have had the German midfielder down as a long-term transfer target.
Schweingsteiger has struggled to hold down a regular place in Pep Guardiola’s midfield this season.
This has led to Kahn telling reporters in Germany that he “could understand it completely if Bastian were to leave”.
He also claimed that: “If you have an offer from a club like Bayern, Barca or Manchester United, you have to accept it.”
Schweinsteiger has been linked with United on several occasions down the years.
David Moyes was understood to be considering a €40million bid last summer, and may return for the 29-year-old at the end of the season.
Moyes has set about rebuilding his Manchester United side, with the £37million capture of Juan Mata from Chelsea last week.
He has also been linked with a possible move for Schweinsteiger’s Bayern Munich and international teammate Toni Kroos, who has seen talks over a contract extension at the Allianz Arena break down.
