Manchester United may look to make a concrete move for Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala in the summer after scouts from the club watched him in Europa League action during the week, according to reports from The Metro.
The French defender featured during a 2-2 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt, and is said to to have impressed the Red Devils’ representatives.
Mangala is understood to have been the subject of multiple scouting missions from the Premier League champions, as David Moyes plots his business ahead of the next transfer window.
The 23-year-old is seen as an ideal replacement for Nemanja Vidic – who is set to leave at the end of the season.
However, United may well have to see off interest from bitter rivals Manchester City.
The Citizens came close to agreeing a deal for the tough-tackling defender last month, but baulked at his pricetag.
It is rumoured that Porto want in excess of £30m for their star, a figure that Moyes may pay given speculation that he has over £100m to spend in the coming months.
United’s ambitions may hinge on Champions League qualification, which depends on them overhauling Liverpool’s current 11 point advantage of winning the competition this season.
