The Argentine looks set to leave the Bernabeu in January, after losing his regular first team place since the arrival of Gareth Bale in the summer.
Manchester United had been mentioned as a possible destination, but now sources in Spain are reporting that French giants Monaco have already opened negotiations with the winger.
The reports suggest the 25-year-old has become increasingly unsettled in Spain under new manager Carlo Ancelotti, and that he has asked his agent Jorge Mendes to find him a new club for the upcoming transfer window.
Mendes represents the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jose Mourinho and Radamel Falcao, and was heavily involved in the latter’s mega money move to Monaco in the summer.
He has also negotiated deals that have seen Joao Moutinho, Ricardo Carvalho and James Rodriguez make the move to the Principality, and it seems as though Di Maria could be next.
The news will come as a huge blow to United boss David Moyes, who had identified Di Maria as a top target for January.
Moyes has been disappointed with the form of Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia and Nani this season, and had hoped to add the Argentine to give his side more dynamic wing play.
But following the news of Monaco’s interest, Moyes may well be forced to search for reinforcements elsewhere.
