The Brazilian, who plays for Cruzeiro in his home country, was voted the league’s best player 2013, and his agent confirmed that a €10m offer had been made.
“We did bring a 10million euro offer to Cruzeiro for Everton Ribeiro but we won’t reveal the club in order not to affect the negotiations, after all they are in the middle of their season,” Ribeiro’s agent Robson Ferreira said.
“We presented the offer to Cruzeiro, we talked and we will schedule another meeting within the next days. The club want to keep him and the player also wants to help the club in the Copa Libertadores.”
While Fereirra refused to confirm which club made the bid, Cruzeiro director of football, Alexandre Mattos confirmed the offer came from England.
“An offer from England arrived yesterday and Cruzeiro turned it down immediately,” Mattos said.
“Maybe an offer will come that will make Cruzeiro understand it would be a mistake not sell, but the important thing is knowing how to find a replacement of the same level.”
United are in the market for a creative midfielder, after missing out on Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas back in the summer. The club have struggled this season, and have been criticised for only making one high-profile signing last transfer window.
