The England international is thought to be David Moyes’ top target for the coming transfer window, as he plots to sign a replacement for the soon to be out of contract Patrice Evra.
Two bids of £10m and £12m for the full-back were made by the Premier League champions over the summer, but both were swiftly dismissed by the Toffees.
But that hasn’t deterred Moyes, who is ready to make another offer for the defender he coached while at Goodison Park.
Although he is a key man for the Merseysiders, Roberto Martinez is thought to be ready to sell if a bid of at least £20m is made, which would be a significant boost to his own transfer kitty ahead of the New Year.
However, with Baines nearing his 29th birthday, Moyes may not be keen to offer such a sum with the set-piece specialist unlikely to have any genuine sell-on value.
The full-back has emerged as one of English football’s top talents in recent years, and is now in direct competition with Chelsea’s Ashley Cole for a starting berth ahead of the World Cup.
