Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is set to offer midfielder Michael Carrick a new long term contract extension, according to goal.com.

The former West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has been pulling the strings for the title chasers this season and is set to be offered a contract extension to run to the summer of 2015.

The England international is currently on a deal worth around £80,000k a week and that is unlikely to change even with the extension being put in place however added bonuses may be included.

Ferguson is desperate to keep hold of this underrated lieutenant who is sure to be introduced back into the England squad next month after missing out on the European Championship’s last summer.

The long serving United boss has high praise for the 31 year old who is having his best ever season with the club and that has not gone unnoticed by his boss.

“I think he’s been magnificent,” said the manager last week.

“He’s doing absolutely brilliantly.

“It is his best-ever season at the club and he’s commanding that position.”
