Manchester United‘s pursuit of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan looks set to end in failure, after the German signed a contract extension with the Bundesliga club, reports the Daily Mirror.
David Moyes is preparing to launch a massive summer spending spree, and had identified the 23-year-old playmaker as a priority signing.
United have endured a dreadful season by their high standards, and look set to miss out on Champions League football for next season.
Moyes had identified Gundogan as a signing to strengthen his under-performing midfield, despite the fact he has missed the majority of this season with a back injury.
There had been talk of a potential £32million deal this summer, with United’s Shinji Kagawa moving in the opposite direction to his former club.
Last week Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke announced the club had offered Gundogan a new deal, and the club yesterday posted a picture on Twitter of the midfielder signing an extension that will keep him at the club until 2016.
David Moyes has also been linked with big money moves for Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos, and Southampton left back Luke Shaw.
