Angel di Maria wanted to join Paris Saint-Germain instead of Manchester United, according to the French champions’ president.
The Argentine became British football’s most expensive player last week as he completed a £59.7m move to Old Trafford from Real Madrid to become a key man in Louis van Gaal’s new look XI.
Although United won the race for the versatile attacker, Di Maria looked likely to join PSG for much of the summer, with negotiations between the Ligue 1 giants and Real having been bubbling away for a while.
And now their president, Nasser Al-Khelaifi, has revealed that the 26-year-old actually wanted to join them instead of United:
“Di Maria wanted to come to Paris,” he is quoted by The Metro.
“Even without FFP, we wouldn’t have signed him.”
Rumours suggest that PSG’s interest could not be followed through due to Financial Fair Play restrictions imposed in the club by UEFA for their lavish spending.
Di Maria made his debut for United in the 0-0 draw at Burnley over the weekend.
