Robin Van Persie has established himself as one of the best strikers in the world in the past couple of seasons- incidentally the only two in his career that he has managed to go without a significant injury.
The Dutch international has hit 29 goals in 39 full appearances for Manchester United. Several pundits described him last season as the difference between Manchester United winning the title back off their rivals or falling into second place again. This claim is enhanced by the fact that it was City challenging for his signature before he chose the Old Trafford club.
Yet, every star seems to have their off day. The chance Van Persie had against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Tuesday night, admittedly while they 4-2 up really could have been scored by several sets of grandparents around the country. It was almost too simple and if it was a different player they would probably be lambasted for it. Every great player can have an off chance, with Wayne Rooney also rounding the keeper before failing to either shoot or pass it to Van Persie- eventually the ball trickled for a goal kick. Or in Van Persie’s case, is it a sign that now he has hit 30 he is on the decline? You decide….
