Wayne Rooney is closing in on a new long-term contract with Manchester United, according to reports from The Sun.

The England international’s Old Trafford future has been the subject of much doubt since he angled for a move to Chelsea over the summer, leading to speculation that he could leave at the end of the season when his deal enters its final 12 months.

However, it has now emerged that discussions between the striker and the club have been bubbling away behind the scenes in recent weeks.

It’s said that Rooney is now keen to stay, and that he has settled on a new big money contract.

The deal will tie him down until the age of 33 and net him a staggering £300,000-per-week – a £50,000-per-week pay rise.

United are said to be desperate to keep their talismanic hit-man and are ready to pay what it takes to ensure that he doesn’t leave.

There have been no official statements from the club, but it’s understood that an announcement could be made soon.

The news may come as a blow to Chelsea, who were rumoured to be considering an end of season raid for ‘Wazza’.
