The Red Devils are set to lose current skipper Nemanja Vidic at the end of the current campaign following the announcement that he will join Inter Milan, which will leave the club without a player to wear the armband next term.
Rather than wait until the summer to bed in a new on-field leader, Moyes is plotting to name Rooney for the role after handing the striker a new contract just a matter of weeks ago.
Although Vidic will see out this term at Old Trafford, the ageing Serbian is by no means a guaranteed starter, which may smooth the process for bedding in a new captain.
Moyes is believed to have been impressed with Rooney’s changed attitude since taking over at United, and a source close to the club said that the step up could be imminent:
“The manager will make Wayne captain and it could be sooner than people think.
“His current captain is leaving and promoting Wayne, the team’s talisman, is the logical thing to do because he is the future.”
