The ‘Special One’ described the tie as the one “the world has been waiting for” recently, with the Spaniards looking to win a tenth European Cup and Cristiano Ronaldo facing his former team just two interesting sub-plots.
Between them, Real and United have claimed the continent’s top prize on 13 occasions, and Fergie believes that Mourinho’s comments were spot on:
“Jose summed it up perfectly,” he is quoted by Sky Sports.
“United and Madrid have that romance about them and that honour and worldwide appeal so it probably is the biggest game you can get in the European Cup.
“I think as soon as the draw was made, there was that anticipation about the tie.
“It’s a fantastic challenge for myself and it should be a fantastic match between two teams and clubs who embrace the best parts of football, with great reputations.”
Whilst United have extended their league lead to 12 points of late, Real have struggled domestically.
The Galacticos are a whopping 16 points adrift of league leaders Barcelona after an underwhelming start to the La Liga season.
This has led to speculation that they make the Champions League their main priority for the rest of the campaign, circumstances that Fergie feels puts the pressure on the Bernabeu-based side:
“I think Jose has set his targets firmly on the European Cup, no doubt about that.
“It can be hard for us but there’s a bit of pressure for them, too. At this moment in time, we’re involved in three (competitions).”
