Kicking off this list is the name on the lips of the majority of Manchester United fans – Luke Shaw.
The young left-back has become a central figure of the Southampton first team since their Premier League ascension in summer 2012 and now has 50 Premier League appearances under his belt. Most impressively, the 18 year-old has never looked out of depth in the top flight.
Marauding, adventurous going forward and unbelievably fast, many have compared the 6 foot 1 full-back to fellow St. Mary’s academy product Gareth Bale in style. A transition to an attacking role in his later career seems unlikely, but it’s nonetheless a fantastic testament to Shaw’s technical abilities and incredible athleticism.
The youngster’s meteoric rise continues, as the tabloids bill him as the world’s first £30million full-back and he’s issued an inaugural call-up to the England seniors to face Denmark next month. The teenage defender could even place Ashley Cole in the World Cup squad.
As previously stated, £30million seems the right price considering Shaw’s obvious potential. But Chelsea view the Southampton star as an ideal replacement for Ashley Cole, and Manchester City will also be in the market for a new No.3 in the summer, suggesting there could be a lengthy bidding war for his services.
