When Brazilian wonderkid Marquinhos was purchased from Roma by Paris Saint Germain, the Roman club lost one of the most promising defenders in world football and were in dire need of a replacement. They decided to go with Morrocan Medhi Benatia, a relatively solid defender plying his trade for Udinese and the transfer went without much hype.
However with Roma, Benatia has been the standout defender in Serie A this season. Not only has he been reliable at the back, but he finished the calendar year joint top scorer – 5 goals – for his side. His performance was a key factor in Roma’s challenge at the top of the table earlier this year.
The departure of Nemanja Vidic and with Ferdinand not getting any younger, Benatia would be more than an adequate replacement for the United captain – making him a potential top priority for David Moyes.
