It's almost inconceivable that Jose Mourinho won't eventually rock up at a news conference soon sporting a red, black and white team tie.

It's almost inconceivable that it will be anyone else but Jose sitting in the hot seat at Old Trafford come July. Yet you have to feel for Louis van Gaal. Here is a man who knows his football, but it's just that our league and our players are so very different to the rest of Europe.

Van Gaal seems to have upset players and the media, and as entertaining as his media interviews are, here is a man with the clock ticking down to the end of the season with a thank you card and a bottle of wine as he clears his desk.

Like a vulture over a dead carcass, Mourinho watches, waits, listens, sends out snippets to keep his name alive in the press and will then swoop into place and take the bad out of Manchester United, digesting the better pieces instead.

As Porto manager, he ran down the line punching the air after goals scored, as a manager at Chelsea, he showed displeasure, and none more so than towards Dr Eva Carneiro. At his first press conference way back at the beginning of his Chelsea career, he announced he was 'the special one.'

Manchester United are the right club for his showcasing style. He might be a bit loud and brash for the traditionalists at United and it's widely acknowledged that Sir Bobby Charlton is not a fan. Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly saying Tottenham's Pochettino is the best Premier League manager, but Poch hasn't done anything yet.

Other managerial names are really just a smokescreen. Mourinho is a winner and yes, he may not be every boardroom's cup of tea, but after Guardiola's appointment at neighbours City, can United afford to be too choosy? They need that big name appointment.

United need titles and trophies. The silverware is drying up and so is the team in a way. They want Champions League football every season  and accept the unbelievable revenue that it creates. The Europa League just doesn't cut it when you are Manchester United.

In the press recently, Jose has been reportedly telling friends it's a done deal and that the job is his. Louis van Gaal must feel like packing his bags now and going home to clogs and tulips.

It has been said that Jose considers van Gaal a close friend and has this friendship in mind despite this ultimate, burning desire to be in his chair. They worked together at Barcelona and the friendship goes back a long way.

"He's very special but he is very special for me because we've continued our relationship," van Gaal said last season. "Which in the football world is not always normal. That's nice."

It's odd that Mourinho himself is quiet, but is allowing those around him to make all the noise on his behalf. Was there a letter? Have talks taken place? Is a three year deal being put together? All speculation but it keeps his name alive, and we all love rumours.

So if Mourinho does become the next United boss, expect to see a lot of transfer activity in the summer. The coaching staff would see a shake-up and where would that leave Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs? It's widely known that Mourinho respects the club and so Giggs' future would possibly still be at Old Trafford.

With Mourinho tied into super-agent Jorge Mendes, anything could happen with their network of players and contacts and so the glory days could be about to return.

Mourinho's Chelsea played good, eye-catching football and Mourinho and United need the same thing right now. To be revitalised. Mourinho appears a little less confrontational these days. Has he lost some of the charm of the past? Is he a little less aggressive?

Whatever you think of Mourinho, he is a good fit for United. The time is right and Mourinho is available.
