Angel di Maria has really struggled at Manchester United since joining in August 2014, but his luck could be about to change.

The Argentine is an unlikely holder of the best 'big chance' creator in the Premier League for the 2014/15 season, according to whoscored.com. They calculated the results by looking at the highest proportion of key passes that Opta define as a 'big chance.'

Many fans have been left confused as to why he cannot find a regular place in the team. After only starting 19 league games this campaign, he has got an impressive 10 assists and according to Opta, 25.2% of Manchester United’s 'big chances' have been created by him. Despite struggling to settle at Old Trafford, Di Maria still has high aspirations for his time in Manchester.

At the beginning of the season he made an immediate impact on the team. In his home debut he got a goal and an assist, as well as creating some excellent chances. This continued into the next game and in the first few months he was showing everyone just why manager Louis van Gaal had signed him. Sadly, it all started to go wrong from there.

The injury Di Maria got at home to Hull City at the end of November really changed his season. In February and March the winger went on a horrendous run of form that saw him substituted frequently in the League and sent off in the FA Cup tie against Arsenal, which saw them knocked out by the current champions. Since then he has struggled to be picked in the team and van Gaal seems to be punishing him for his mistakes.

However, there are two main factors which show that the odds are in favour Di Maria at United. He is determined and he has an impressive ability both on and off the ball. Van Gaal has that Di Maria needs to learn how to play in his team and that he is waiting to see if that can happen. Despite playing in a number of positions, Di Maria is the top assister for the Red Devils and his ability to pick out players in the box is second to none. It is clear that he and captain Wayne Rooney like the partnership they have together and next season, provided they both stay fit, it could take the Premier League by force.

Playing for Real Madrid and playing in the Premier League is a completely different thing. It is the reason many Premier League teams, like Manchester City, have struggled in the Champions League.

It takes time to adjust and adapt to the style of play but he is determined to show the fans the 'real Di Maria and become a part of 'Manchester United history.' When the winger left Real Madrid he was classed as one of their best and most important players but that took a long time to come after he was booed of the pitch by fans at the beginning of his time there.

Di Maria offers van Gaal something different. He has class and he has an amazing set of skills but the beginning of next season will be crucial.

The Argentine could be Manchester United’s star man next season, if Van Gaal learns to forgive him for his mistakes.
