Manchester United’s acquisition of Juan Mata is yet to be finalised, but Jose Mourinho revealed this afternoon that Chelsea have accepted the £37million bid and allowed the Spaniard to have a medical at Old Trafford.
The 25 year-old was once a central figure at Stamford Bridge, winning back-to-back Player of the Year awards in West London and last term claiming twelve goals and twelve assists in the Premier League.
But following the return of the Special One back in the summer, the former Valencia playmaker has slumped down the Blues pecking order, apparently due to his lack of defensive work-rate.
Having made just eleven starts in the top flight this season, producing a slim return of only two assists, the Spain international’s father and agent held crisis talks with the Chelsea boss earlier this month to decide his son’s future.
He’s now in line for a United switch, seen as the perfect candidate to add some much-needed attacking verve and invention to the Premier League champions’ midfield, as they dwindle in seventh place in the English table.
£37million is a record-breaking sum for the Red Devils, but Mata is a world-class talent and his arrival will undoubtedly boost morale at Carrington.
