Jose Mourinho must have woken up with a sore head this morning. The Blues boss would have been hoping for a positive return to his old stomping ground, but he was instead on the wrong end of a 4-0 mauling at the hands of Chelsea.
Naturally, ‘The Special One’ took it well, aiming pit-shots at his opposite number, Antonio Conte, while also having a sly dig at the Londoners’ fans. Then, to make matters that little bit worse, Eric Bailly was declared out for an extended period with a knee injury.
As far as weekends go, it was not a great one for Mourinho, then. However, it may not have entirely been his fault. Indeed, Pedro’s opener after 33 seconds threw the game-plan he’d devised out of the window, at which point his players needed to step up and take some responsibility.
But they wilted under the pressure, which is sure to have frustrated the Portuguese tactician and kept him up all night mulling over where it went wrong.
David de Gea
It may not be popular to aim a dig at De Gea, but the Spaniard was not at his best yesterday. After just 33 seconds he’d been caught out, his hesitance allowing Pedro to open the scoring, while his usual heroics behind the Man United defence were not present, contributing to the heavy loss.
He wasn’t helped by those in front of him, but his part in the opening goal cannot be overlooked.
Chris Smalling
The Manchester Evening News’ decision to give Smalling a 0 out of 10 rating just about says it all. The English centre-back was exceptional against Liverpool on Monday night, but that composed performance looked a world away during a 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge in which he was pulled apart by the Blues.
In fairness, Smalling was not the only dysfunctional cog. But as captain in the absence of Wayne Rooney, much of the responsibility falls on him. The way in which he was beaten by N’Golo Kante for the last goal was just embarrassing.
Paul Pogba
That £89m Man United paid is looking like a costly investment at this stage. Pogba was freed up from his usual role as one of a midfield two against Chelsea as Mourinho thrust him into more of a ‘No.10’ position, but the Frenchman was running around like a headless chicken and did little with the ball at his feet.
The 23-year-old is becoming a real problem at Man United and must be somewhat effected by the negative press he’s received.
