It wasn’t always pretty and Marouane Fellaini’s winner was far from a blockbuster of a goal, but Manchester United have come away from south London with a vital three points. The Red Devils entered the match on the back of three straight losses, in which they had failed to score a single goal. And with Liverpool on their tail for the top four spot, the pressure was on.Palace though were safe from relegation before a ball was even kicked, but the Selhurst Park crowd are known for their ferocity, so there was no chance of the Eagles easing off. Here are THREE things we learnt from the 2-1 United win…[interaction ]

The top four race is over

By the end of play on Sunday, Manchester United’s return to the Champions League could be secured. The win at Palace moves them seven points clear of Liverpool, who have a difficult task at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea in less than 24 hours. Even if by some miracle the Reds do win, United will still have games against Arsenal and Hull to edge over the line. Congrats, Louis van Gaal.

Palace need to build around Puncheon

Pardew said it before the game, Puncheon has been his best player since his arrival at Selhurst Park. But the former Southampton man was dropped to the bench after some wobbly recent showings, and his influence was missed during the first 45 minutes.

However, he came on at half-time and immediately injected energy into the Eagles’ XI, before showing his quality with a lovely free-kick. Palace need to make Puncheon the focal point of their side to build for next season.

Pardew… manager of the season?

Palace are already safe, Newcastle are drifting towards the relegation zone. Magpies fans were overjoyed when ‘Pardiola’ shuffled off to London in January, but the clubs’ fortunes have varied wildly since.

Pardew has mirrored the impact of Tony Pulis last term – who was named the league’s top manager – by keeping the club in the top tier, so does he deserve recognition? Well, he should be a candidate, surely.
