United suffer blow in pursuit of Bundesliga midfielder

Manchester United have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

The Red Devils are interested in bringing Gundogan to Old Trafford, as David Moyes prepares a summer revamp to stop United’s decline down the Premier League table. But the Express are reporting that United will be rivalled by Barcelona for the midfielder, with the Catalan club sending a doctor to check on Gundogan’s recovery from injury.

Dr Richard Pruna wasn’t able to assess Victor Valdes’ knee injury because he was in Germany visiting the Dortmund midfielder. Gundogan hasn’t played since August after suffering a serious back injury, and is expected to leave the club this summer.

The Express are also suggesting that United could be prepared to make a swap deal for Gundogan wiith Shinji Kagawa. The Japanese star joined United in 2012, but has struggled to get regular football under both Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes.

Gundogan played a vital role in Borussia Dortmund’s Champions League run last year, as the club reached the final at Wembley, where despite scoring a penalty, the 23-year-old could only come away with a runners-up medal. Rivals Bayern Munich won 2-1.

But United could miss out on the midfielder, with Barcelona assessing Gundogan ahead of an expected summer bid.
