The two teams played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the initial clash which Rooney missed, but he is ready to return to the team tonight after not featuring since tearing a ligament in the back of his knee during training on Christmas day
Sir Alex Ferguson is eager to get the England international back playing, so that he can regain his full match fitness by the time United visit the Bernabeu for their crunch last 16 Champions League tie against Real Madrid.
“Both Nani and Wayne will play, both are fit,” Ferguson told the Mirror.
“Wayne coming back is good news. He has been training for a week and he’s looking good.”
Tonight’s game is the first of five Rooney can play before the Madrid game, and Ferguson believes Rooney needs more time than other players to get back to full speed due to his physique.
He said, “He’s missed bits of games and I think Wayne is the type of player who can’t miss games.
“The frame he’s got, the type of person he is, he needs to play all the time.”
The 27-year-old has suffered with a few fitness problems so far this season, missing 10 games through illness and injury.
Another boost for the Red Devils on the injury front is the news that Nemanja Vidic and Ashley Young’s injuries are not serious.
