Newcastle United and Southampton will have to wait until the summer to pursue their interest in Anderlecht defender Cheikhou Kouyate, as the Senegalese international wants to stay in Belgium until at least the end of the season, according to talkSPORT.
Both clubs have been heavily linked with the defender since the summer, along with league leaders Arsenal. However a deal could not be agreed after Anderlecht refused to lower their £7million asking price for the powerful defender.
The 23-year-old has confirmed he is still hopeful of completing a move to the Premier League in the future, but it will not be in January as he wants to claim his fourth league title with the Belgian club before moving on.
“I want to finish the season here. I want to win the title with Anderlecht,” he told La Derniere Heure.
“And if this is not the case, I still want to go. I do not want to leave this team now. I will design a transfer at the end of the season.”
The same source also revealed Anderlecht will seek around £5.5million for the defender in the summer.
Newcastle will reassess the situation in the summer, as it is still unclear as to whether Fabio Colocinni will remain in the North East.
The Argentine defender has been consistently linked with a return to his homeland, meaning the Magpies could be in the market for a replacement in the summer.
