To say Newcastle have been a source great frustration for their supporters would be an understatement. On the transfer front alone, the club move with the kind of inconsistency that can only keep a club entrenched in mid-table mediocrity.

But the club are in need of something uplifting this summer, especially after selling fan-favourite Yohan Cabaye during the January window. The recent addition of former Ajax captain Siem de Jong is a very good step in the right direction.

Loic Remy was Newcastle’s only summer signing last year, arriving on loan. And while the Frenchman did extremely well, fans will be demanding much more in the way of ambition from the club’s hierarchy.

Here’s a look at five players who could help to complete Alan Pardew’s squad for next season.

Remy Cabella

Remy Cabella

Remy Cabella has always looked destined for a move away from Montpellier since breaking into the first team. He experienced Champions League football during his second full season in the first team and excelled at the highest level of European football.

While others in the Premier League have made their interest known, Newcastle appear to have jumped to the head of the queue for the talented midfielder, who would be seen as the creative replacement for Yohan Cabaye.

Cabella would be a fantastic signing for Newcastle this summer, and at a reported £9.5 million, he could prove to be a real bargain.

Carl Jenkinson

Carl Jenkinson

It’s long been said that Carl Jenkinson is in need of a loan spell away from Arsenal, and Newcastle may be the perfect destination with Mathieu Debuchy going the other way as Bacary Sagna’s replacement.

Jenkinson has been unable to get regular games at the Emirates but has shown promise. He needs to fine tune his defensive game, but he gets forward well. Being 22, there’s potentially a lot more to come from the right-back.

It remains to be seen whether Jenkinson is to be moved on from Arsenal permanently, with the club said to be after Atletico’s Javier Manquillo. But one way or another, a run of first-team football will do Jenkinson the world of good, while Newcastle would land themselves a more than capable addition to the squad.

Jack Rodwell

Jack Rodwell

Newcastle have been sounded out as a number of destinations for Jack Rodwell, who has seen very little game time in his two years at Manchester City. The former Everton midfielder was touted as one of England’s brightest talents, and is now in need of a kick-start on his ailing career.

Rodwell could bring a lot to Newcastle, who need some inspiration in the middle of the pitch following the sale of Yohan Cabaye in January.

Rodwell offered up plenty of exciting performances while he was on Merseyside and perhaps just needs a run of games to rediscover that form. He has the talent to be the hub of Newcastle’s midfield.

Jonathan Soriano

Jonathan Soriano has an outstanding scoring record with Red Bull Salzburg, where he’s managed to get his career started after struggling for first-team football in Catalonia.

The Spanish striker had spells at both Espanyol and Barcelona but couldn’t make the jump up to the first team at the Camp Nou from Barcelona B, where injuries played a significant part in halting his progress.

He’s 28 now but has managed to find fitness and form with the Austrian side. He’s also capable of producing in Europe, helping his side to a shock win over Ajax in the Europa League.

Soriano very much looks the part and could be an unbelievable bargain for Newcastle if they manage to land his signature.

Joel Campbell

Joel Campbell

Joel Campbell is another Arsenal player who could head to Newcastle as part of the deal that sees Mathieu Debuchy end up at the Emirates, though even as an isolated deal, the loan signing of the Costa Rica forward would be a very good piece of business by Alan Pardew.

Campbell proved to be one of his nation’s best players at the World Cup and left many Arsenal fans eager to see him in the Premier League.

He’s versatile, able to play anywhere across the front three, and clearly has an eye for goal. A loan spell at a Premier League club for Campbell could prove to be beneficial to both Arsenal and Newcastle.
