Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier has indicated he is unlikely to sign for Newcastle United before Friday’s transfer deadline, reports Chronicle Live.

The midfielder was the subject of a bid from Alan Pardew’s side, with the Magpies keen to bring in a replacement for Yohan Cabaye.

Cabaye has completed a move to Paris St Germain, leaving Pardew searching for a replacement creative midfielder before the close of the transfer window.

But the Lyon star refused to give much away, indicating a move to St James’ Park this month appeared unlikely.

Speaking at the Lions Of Sport Awards tonight he said: “I haven’t got a lot to say on that subject.

“I’m not aware of Newcastle negotiations.

“I have lots of objectives and I need to achieve them with Lyon this year.

“I can nearly say I’m not going to Newcastle.”

Pardew may yet respond with another bid for the French midfielder, or turn his attentions elsewhere.

The Magpies are keen to replace Cabaye with a quality midfielder, with the Frenchman having been their stand out performer of the season, scoring seven Premier League goals.
