Alan Pardew says he will have discussions about the possibility of appealing Fabricio Coloccini's red card from yesterday's Premier League match with Liverpool, but feels deep down they will have to accept the decision.

Coloccini was sent off in the 1-1 draw at Anfield for a lunge on Luis Suarez. Whether Newcastle's captain showed intent has provoked fierce debate since.

However, while Pardew initially accepted referee Anthony Taylor's call, he now seems to have started to backtrack, but is unconvinced an appeal would be successful.

"I didn't see it at the time, so I was really unsure. I knew it was my captain, and I know he's got no intent in him. I went to see the referee at the end because I wanted to ask him what it was for, I really didn't know," Pardew said.

"He said it was dangerous intent, but I wanted the clarification before the referee came off the pitch. Looking at it on the video, it doesn't look too good, but from another angle he's putting his foot down to stop himself.

"I spoke to him, I don't think there's any malicious intent there although we might have to accept it. I'll discuss an appeal further with the secretary and everyone else at the football club.

"I told the referee, that having seen the incident, I can see why he sent him off, I have no problem with that. But it's a blow for us to lose our captain. Part of me knows there was no intention with Colo, but looking at the video, I don't really think we've got anywhere to go. So my gut feeling is we won't appeal, but I want to discuss it some more."

Former Newcastle player Michael Owen criticised the sending off on Twitter, calling it "laughable."
