Newcastle are closing in on a deal for Remy Cabella, after agreeing a fee for the midfielder with Montpellier, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

The Magpies have been hot on the heels of the French playmaker for some time, and were rumoured to be close to snapping him up in January as Yohan Cabaye left for PSG.

The silky passer was dubbed as the natural heir to the departed Magpies idol, and now it appears that he will be heading to St James’ Park to fill the creative void.

Outspoken Montpellier chairman Louis Nicollin said “we have a deal” when asked about the situation, with Newcastle understood to have lodged an official £9m offer midway through last week.

The 24-year-old – who travelled to the World Cup with Les Bleus – is yet to agree personal terms with the ‘Toon’, but he may be tempted to do so to join the club’s large French contingent.

Cabella is able to play in a central role or from wide and has been lauded for his vision and technique.

Arsenal and Manchester United have also been linked with him in the past.
