Newcastle are attempting to lure winger Dimitri Payet away from Ligue 1 side Marseille, according to Chronicle.

The 27-year-old has been a long-time target of Newcastle and Marseille manager Marcelo Bielsa has told the Frenchman he is no longer needed at the club.

It’s believed Payet would be be available for no more than £8million, which is well within Newcastle’s price range.

News of this deal comes on the heels of reports that negotiations between Newcastle and Montpellier over Remy Cabella have hit a stalemate.

Montpellier are believed to want a figure just north of £12 million for the winger, while the Magpie’s value him him at just £8m. Newcastle are considering a are considering another offer, but are unlikely to match the fee Montpellier are asking for.

The 24-year-old is believed to be near the top of Newcastle’s wish list this summer after turning in the best campaign of his short career last season, amassing 14 goals in 37 matches.
