Newcastle look set for a summer fight to keep Mathieu Debuchy at St James’ Park with Roma interested in the right-back, according to reports from talkSPORT.

The 28-year-old ace has been one of the Magpies’ more consistent performers in an up and down season on Tyneside, and is already regarded as a fans’ favourite despite him having only arrived at the club in January 2013.

His impressive displays have caught the attention of Rudi Garcia at Roma, with the Frenchman a big fan of the defender after working with him at Lille.

The Italian giants are known to be in the market for reinforcements this summer, with Champions League qualification looking to be a foregone conclusion on the back of a fine campaign.

Debuchy – who is under contract at Newcastle until 2018 – is thought to be a top target, and it is understood that Roma are willing to take him during the off-season.

Although a key man in Alan Pardew’s set-up, it’s thought that an offer in the region of £8.5m will be enough to convince the club’s hierarchy to sell.

Debuchy himself may also be open to the move, with suggestions circulating that a number of Newcastle’s French players were left upset by the sale of Yohan Cabaye to PSG in January.
