Alan Pardew believes that he must strengthen Newcastle’s squad in the January transfer market, following his side’s 2-0 Europa League defeat to Bordeaux.

The Magpies had already guaranteed their spot in the final 32 of the competition before kick-off in France.

As a result Pardew fielded a team of fringe players, resting stars such as Demba Ba and Tim Krul.

Although he was happy with his team making it through the group, the Newcastle manager was quick to highlight a need to strengthen his squad:

"We wanted to qualify, that was the first agenda in this competition, and we did that with a game to spare.” He told SkySports.

"I think it would have been difficult coming here if we both hadn't qualified and they played their best team on that pitch.

"It would have been difficult for us because they have got some very good players.

"But the bottom line is we have qualified and we can look forward to February.

"I am just hoping that, fingers-crossed, when we come out of the other side of the window, we have got a stronger squad."

Two goals from Cheick Diabate settled the tie. The first came via a solid header and the striker rounded off the scoring with 20 minutes left to play, breaking Newcastle’s high defensive line to slot home.
