Amid the era of lightening-paced counter-attacks and even counter-attacking lightening-paced counter-attacks, away fixtures aren't quite what they used to be.

Indeed, it feels as if the advantage is often with the visitors nowadays, who can sit back and wait for their chances whilst the home team begin to feel the pressure of supporters goading them to relentlessly venture forward.

Players are quicker and more powerful than ever before, whilst tactics have never been more complex and precise throughout the beautiful game's long history.

With that in mind and a fair chunk of the Premier League season already gone, we at FootballFanCast have been turning our attention to the division's best performers on the road - most specifically looking at the top ten, courtesy of our mates at Whoscored.com.

It features some well-known Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Manchester United stars, but there's also a fair few surprises along the way!

10. Phillipe Coutinho

Liverpool v West Bromwich Albion - Premier League

Liverpool's season began with three Premier League fixtures on the road as the club completed the building of the Main Stand. Most would see that as a disadvantage but attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho clearly disagrees, muscling his way into the top ten with two goals and one assist in five appearances. He also ranks third throughout the division for shots at goal when playing away with an impressive 4.2 per match.

9. Theo Walcott

Theo Walcott

Theo Walcott's been in phenomenal form since his exclusion from England's Euro 2016 squad, particularly impressing on the road. He's claimed one goal and two assists in four outings, whilst averaging 1.5 created chances and 2.3 successful dribbles per match.

8. Ander Herrera

Ander Herrera

Ander Herrera may be yet to record a goal or assist in the Premier League this season but he's made a real difference to Manchester United's efforts away from Old Trafford, with an average rating of 7.71. That's in no small part due to a spirited performance at Anfield last week, which saw the Spanish midfielder record a staggering eleven interceptions against Liverpool - the most of any Premier League player in a single match this season.

7. Heung-min Son

Heung-min Son

Harry Kane's injury has paved the way for Heung-min Son to adopt goalscoring duties in Tottenham Hotspur's attacking line-up and all four of his Premier League goals this season have come on the road. That haul consists of impressive braces against Middlesbrough and Stoke City.

6. Christian Benteke

Lukaku and Benteke

Christian Benteke's already proving a steal at £30million but the Crystal Palace signing is still waiting for his first Premier League goal at Selhurst Park. Regardless, Alan Pardew will be delighted with his away form, netting thrice in four appearances - namely strikes against Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Everton.

5. Nicolas Otamendi

Nicolas Otamendi

The only defender in our top ten, Nicolas Otamendi's all-action style is certainly appreciated by those at Whoscored. City are still awaiting their first clean sheet away from home but few can blame the Argentine centre-back, who has averaged the second-most interceptions per match, five, of any Premier League player on the road in addition to 2.5 tackles and 5.3 clearances.

4. Sergio Aguero

Manchester United v Manchester City - EFL Cup Fourth Round

Sergio Aguero is the most lethal striker in the Premier League and his away haul pays testament to that. Indeed, the Argentine has bagged four goals in just three away outings, coming in the form of braces against Swansea and Stoke City. In contrast, he's scored just twice in two appearances at the Etihad Stadium.

3. Kevin De Bruyne

Kevin de Bruyne Pep Guardiola

Finishing off our Manchester City trio is Kevin De Bruyne. Barring an injury-inflicted performance against Southampton last weekend, the Belgium playmaker has been nothing short of fantastic this season but particularly outside the Etihad Stadium. He's notched up one goal and two assists in three appearances, whilst averaging four created chances per match - the highest return throughout the Premier League away from home.

2. Wilfried Zaha

Middlesbrough v Crystal Palace - Premier League

Wilfried Zaha's producing the kind of form that could soon see him tipped for a first England call-up since 2012. In terms of his away performances, the former Manchester United starlet has claimed one goal and two assists in four appearances. But his rise to second place in this top ten is largely down to one factor - his rather incredible return of 7.3 successful dribbles per match, ranking him first throughout the division.

1. Alexis Sanchez

Arsenal v PFC Ludogorets Razgrad - UEFA Champions League Group Stage - Group A

Whilst Alexis Sanchez may not dominate any single Premier League chart, he ranks highly on every metric Whoscored measure attacking players on, with eerily equal averages of 3.5 shots, dribbles and created chances per match. Perhaps most importantly, he's bagged three goals and one assist in four appearances on the road, propelling himself to pole position.
