With the end of the season fast approaching English football fans attention will be turning to the summer and to the European Championship taking place in Poland and Ukraine.

As usual there has been much debate as to who should be boarding the plane and which sorry players should be left at home to watch the football spectacle on television. One name that has been mentioned more and more as of late is ex-Shrewsbury Town striker Grant Holt.

Holty has been on terrific form this season and has proved all his doubters wrong, hitting the net a total of 14 times this season, the second highest total for any English striker with only Wayne Rooney having scored more.

With Rooney missing the first two games of the group stages for me Holty seems like a natural replacement for the United striker. With his strength and prescence up-front he certainly isn't one to be underestimated and he brings something to the table that players like Welbeck and Sturridge can't and that is his strength and experience. We need a target man and Holt seems the obvious choice.

A number of things may work against Holt when it comes to his selection however. At the age of 31 he has hit the peak of his career quite late on and this could hinder his chances. His discipline record is far from impressive either. He has recieved seven yellow cards for the canaries this season and been sent off once which is hardly the most encouraging sort of record for an out-and-out striker to have.

The fact that he plays for Norwich City, an unfashionable club who are outside the top six, may not work in his favour either.

Since Holt has left Shrewsbury he has proven time and time again that he is one of the best strikers England has to offer, hitting the net over 20 times in each of his last three seasons and he is also one of few English players left in the game with a career total which tops 200 goals.

So will Holt get his much desired call up? Wouldn't it be fantastic to see two ex-Town players lining up for England on the opening game of the Euros? ( Former Shrews keeper Joe Hart obviously being the other) Only time will tell.

Let me know on Twitter if you agree that Holty should be the plane?
