Southampton face a battle to keep hold of manager Mauricio Pochettino, with Tottenham considering him as a possible replacement for Tim Sherwood, according to talkSPORT.

The former Espanyol boss has been a revelation on the south coast since taking over following the shock sacking of Nigel Adkins last year.

Saints owner Katharina Leibherr is keen to tie the Argentine down to a new long term contract, with the club’s new chairman Ralph Kruger claiming to have held positive talks already with the 44-year-old.

But the Saints are believed to be facing a battle to keep their highly rated manager, with Tottenham reportedly on the brink of sacking Tim Sherwood.

Sherwood was handed an 18-month contract at White Hart Lane in December following the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas, but the north Londoners are considering a change after back to back defeats to Chelsea and Arsenal all but ended their challenge for a top four place.

And Pochettino – who recently dismissed suggestions he was a candidate for the managers job at Real Madrid – is believed to be high on Tottenham’s list of managerial targets.
