Nathaniel Clyne was delighted to score his first goal for Southampton and praised Gaston Ramirez’ impact at the club, as Saints beat Aston Villa 4-1 to secure their first win of the season, the official Southampton website reports.

Ramirez was a £12million summer arrival from Bologna - breaking the club’s transfer record, but he appears to be worth every penny according to Clyne.

"Gastón is fantastic – he's a great player with lots of creativity.

"He has the ability to find players, so I made a nice little run and he put me in so all I had to do was finish it,” the full-back told Saints Player.

Although it could have been a very different story at St Mary’s, had Villa built on the 36th-minute lead they took through Darren Bent.

But the south coast side responded to the set-back, thanks to Clyne, a brace from Rickie Lambert  and an own-goal from Ciaran Clark.

It was the perfect way for Nigel Adkins’ side to achieve their first victory and showed the determination within the team, which will be vital in a relegation battle.

"We're happy with the points, and hopefully that can be a kick-start for the season," Clyne added.
