Southampton target Diego has moved to deny stories linking him with a possible return to Atletico Madrid in January, according to talkSPORT.
The 28-year-old spent a season on loan at the Spanish capital club in 2011/12, and is currently on the books of Bundesliga club Wolfsburg.
Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino is a known admirer of the creative midfielder, and has been linked with a possible January bid.
Diego is out of contract with the Bundesliga club in the summer, and reports suggest they may look to cash in during the January transfer window in order to avoid losing him on a free transfer in a few months.
But the former Porto and Juventus midfielder has insisted he will not be returning to the Vicente Calderon, and also claimed he will look to see out the remainder of his contract in Germany.
He told Spanish radio station Cadena Cope: “I know that [Atletico Madrid coach Diego] Simeone has great esteem and affection towards me, he is a great coach and I wish him well to win any major trophy this season.
“However, it is impossible for me to return to Atletico in January, there have been no contacts and I have a contract to fulfil. In the future, however, everything is possible. ”
