Southampton have been told to up their offer for Cagliari defender David Astori by his agent.
The Saints are said to be highly interested in the Italian, and have made an opening £8m offer for his signature as they look to build a squad capable of maintaining Premier League status.
However, this fee falls some way short of the Serie A club’s valuation and Renzo Constratto has urged the South Coast outfit to dig a little deeper if they are serious about the 25-year-old:
“There is an important offer from Southampton but we don’t know if Cagliari want to let him go.” He told Sky Sports.
“There is a big difference between the bid and the request of the Italian club, which is about £12million.”
He went on to state that if a deal can be reached between the clubs that his client will contemplate a move:
“If Cagliari were to accept Southampton’s offer, Davide would be willing to consider the proposal.
“He would have no problem going to play in a foreign league such as the Premier League.”
Liverpool are also thought to be chasing the highly rated centre-back, but are reluctant to match the requester fee.
The ex-AC Milan man is said to be Southampton boss Nigel Adkins’ main target during the transfer window as he looks to shore up his side’s leaky defensive line.
