Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has revealed that he is “proud” of speculation linking him with a summer move to Real Madrid.
The Potters stopper has recently emerged as a shock target for the La Liga leaders, who are believed to be shopping around for a long-term replacement for the out-of-favour Iker Casillas.
Since joining the Britannia Stadium side in 2010 from Portsmouth, Begovic has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most consistent glovesmen, and has been associated with switches to the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City.
Now Real coach Carlo Ancelotti is said to have been keen on the Bosnian ‘keeper when he was in charge at Stamford Bridge, and it is understood that approaches were made.
Although he insists that he is happy at Stoke, Begovic says that he is happy to be linked with a club of Los Blancos’ stature:
“I’m proud to read that sort of stuff, but it’s just rumours.” He told the Stoke Sentinel.
“There’s nothing official or any contact with anyone from Madrid.
“It’s extraordinary, brilliant, to be linked with a club like that, one of the biggest in the world.
“I’m very happy at Stoke and I have an excellent position here. I only think about my club.
“If you come to me with more than speculation then I’ll give you more specific answers in the future.”
