Sunderland are expected to sign Manchester City goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon in the coming days, according to The Journal.

Sunderland are reportedly set to hold talks with the Romanian international this week and believe they can convince him to join the Black Cats.

They have already been active this summer after bringing in Jordi Gomez and fullback Billy Jones, and manager Gus Poyet wants to bolster his squad with players who have Premier League experience while staying within a budget.

Sunderland fans can expect to see a very different side next season, with attackers Steven Fletcher and Adam Johnson two of the bigger names that could move on.

But any overhaul that Poyet hopes to accomplish will have to be done at a relatively small price, as club owner Ellis Short wants to keep the wage level remain near its current level.

Two of Sunderland’s most desirable targets are Fabio Borini and Ashley Williams, although deals for both players are expected to be a long way from becoming a reality.

Pantilimon, 27, is expected to be announced as a Sunderland player sometime later this week and will battle with Vito Mannone for the number one jersey.
