The Swansea centre-back has been linked with a move away from the Liberty Stadium, with Arsenal reportedly interested.
But it’s Gus Poyet’s Sunderland that have made the first move for the 29-year-old, who is yet to agree a new deal with his Welsh club. Should Williams fail to agree terms with Swansea, he could leave for free next season, as he only has 1 year remaining on his current deal.
Sunderland are looking to do the majority of the transfer deals early this summer, and after losing Craig Gardner and Phil Bardsley, have already signed Billy Jones and Jordi Gomez. The Black Cats have also secured Seb Larsson on a new 3-year deal.
Poyet managed to steer Sunderland away from relegation last season, as well as guiding them to the Capital One Cup final, only to be defeated by Manchester City in a tight encounter. And now the Uruguayan manager is keen to build on his current squad, with Williams his next target.
Swansea will have to decide William’s future this summer, with the Welsh club knowing this is their only chance to bring in some cash for the defender’s services.
