This article’s first quote of the season is actually from the end of last season, namely, Sir Alex Ferguson’s farewell speech at Old Trafford.
A tear-jerking occasion indeed, but in hindsight, the most prevalent words were Fergie’s demand to the Manchester United fanbase, telling the Carrington crowd three days after it was announced that Everton’s David Moyes would be taking the Red Devils hot seat next season; “I’d also like to remind you that when we had bad times here, the club stood by me, all my staff stood by me, the players stood by me. Your job now is to stand by our new manager. That is important”
Seven months later, with Manchester United miles off the pace and facing the prospect of not qualifying for Europe under Moyes, fans tried to untie his ‘Chosen One’ banner from the Old Trafford rafters.
Two months after that, a plane flew over Old Trafford with the banner “Chosen Wrong – Moyes out”.
And a month after that, following a 2-0 defeat to former club Everton, the Scot was given the sack.
