Gael Kakuta’s arrival at the Bridge in 2007 was a transfer that even Roman Abramovich would consider costly.
Chelsea were found guilty of persuading the once highly-rated midfielder to breach the terms of his contract with French club Lens and were subsequently slapped with a transfer embargo following an investigation two years later. The Court of Arbitration for Sport did eventually clear the London club of any wrongdoing but the sorry saga tarnished plenty of reputations.
As for Kakuta, the 21-year-old looks destined for a departure, having spent the majority of his time with the Blues out on loan.
He told L’Equipe: “It’s better for me to leave the club and find one where I could play matches. This is an important moment of my career. I need to play.”
