Name: Bruno Martins Indi
International Caps: 17
Position: Central Defender
As part of the Netherlands’ three man defence in their opening match, Martins Indi impressed in the shock 5-1 victory over Spain and is expected to retain his place against Australia this afternoon. With the defender’s current form attracting admiring glances from Roberto Martinez and Louis Van Gaal, the Dutchman could find himself at the centre of a transfer tussle between Everton and Manchester United this summer.
Despite only standing at a modest 5 foot 11 inches, Martins Indi is a dominant force in the air and poses a significant threat at set-pieces. Strong in the tackle too, the 22 year old also boasts the pace to make recovery interceptions and tackles.
In addition to these defensive strengths, the 22 year old is also very comfortable on the ball. The Dutchman is more than capable of bringing the ball out and building attacks from the back. Although he still has a way to go in his footballing development, Martins Indi possesses all of the raw technical and physical attributes to suggest that he could go on to become one of European football’s finest defenders.
Although he has filled in at left back for Feyenoord, the Dutchman shouldn’t be signed on the basis of this versatility. In these matches, the 22 year old has at times been caught out of position due to his desire to get forward. Whilst these are flaws that could be worked on, the Dutchman’s long term future is most certainly at centre back.
If Everton and United do firm up their interest with a concrete offer this summer, Feyenoord will likely be powerless to prevent Martins Indi’s departure. Right now though, the defender will be focused upon helping the Netherlands build upon their impressive start in Brazil.
