Name: Serge Aurier
Country: Ivory Coast
International Caps: 8
Position: Right Back
With Arsene Wenger and Brendan Rodgers set to do battle over Aurier’s signature, fans of Arsenal and Liverpool will be keen to see the right back in action this summer. The 21 year old is expected to line up against Japan later tonight.
Dubbed “the Dani Alves of Ligue 1″, Aurier was recently named in the division’s “Team of the Year” for 2013/14. Despite the burden of his defensive duties, the right back managed to record an incredible six goals and six assists for Toulouse this season.
As a physical specimen, there are few more impressive than Aurier. The defender is remarkably strong on the ball and a force to be reckoned with in the air. The Ivorian has also displayed great athleticism and stamina in his frequent offensive surges down the flanks.
However, Aurier is at times guilty of making rash challenges and will hope to improve his decision-making through experience. Eleven yellow cards in Ligue 1 last season provides the evidence for this point. And like many modern full backs, the 21 year old is at times culpable for shirking his defensive duties.
For a fee reported to be around the £7 million mark, Toulouse are almost resigned to losing one of their crown jewels this summer. But if Aurier shines for his country this summer, beginning against Japan tonight, Arsenal and Liverpool may be left to count the financial cost of not wrapping up the transfer earlier.
