Attacking Midfield - Yaya Toure

Yaya Toure is a player who always surprises me. When Manchester City paid £24million for him in summer 2010, I expected your run of the mill, 6 foot 3, tough-tackling, free-fouling, physically-based defensive midfielder with a hint of tica-taca flair.

How wrong I was. The Ivorian is so much more than that. He’s one of the best central midfielders in world football, capable of controlling the game via the ball and like a battering ram of goalscoring prowess when he ventures into the final third.

Yet despite Toure’s world-class reputation already being confirmed ahead of this season, the 30 year-old has once again caught me off guard by claiming an unbelievable 17 goals and five assists in 28 Premier League appearances.

He also got on the scoresheet in the Champions League, and who can forget his sensational strike in the League Cup final against Sunderland, which quickly instigated a 3-1 romping.

That goal return makes Toure the Premier League’s third-top scorer this season, just three goals behind Liverpool’s Daniel Sturridge.

The Ivory Coast international would get into any team in world football at the moment, so he certainly gets the nod for this select XI.
