Manchester United to Liverpool - a transfer move that has not yet happened during Premier League history.

In-fact the last official transfer between the two clubs was that of Phil Chisnall back in 1964 when to United frontman made the switch to Merseyside in a whopping £25,000 deal. (that money was huge for those days anyway)

Not since has a player swapped Old Trafford directly for Anfield, nor vice versa, with the closet to anything of the sort being Michael Owen’s injury-hit stint in Manchester from 2009-2012 having left Liverpool 5 seasons before and having played for both Real Madrid and Newcastle United in the space between.

Why no such transfer have happened we can only guess - however the intense, long-standing rivalry between the two clubs is likely to be a major factor, with neither willing to sell to their rivals in order to strengthen their sides, nor players being likely to want to switch and face the backlash of either set of fans.

However times of changed and the United-Liverpool derby of old has somewhat disappeared, with both sides having slumped into mediocrity over the past seasons - failing to deliver anything like the sort of mouth watering trophy-full seasons of years gone by.

With United the more likely to now make a push for the title under Jose Mourinho, Liverpool could just find themselves in a position to steal some of the Portuguese manager’s un-wanted stars this summer and finally make that elusive first Premier League transfer between the two happen.

Here are the three we think it could be...

Bastian Schweinsteiger

Schweinsteiger

Schweinsteiger is allegedly fearful of his Manchester United future following Mourinho’s summer appointment and recently hung up his international boots in order to focus solely on his club career.

At 31 however, the German seems to be surplus to requirements in a young and now mightily expensive Manchester United midfield - especially if Paul Pogba makes his rumours £100 million move to Old Trafford in the next few days.

A proven winner at all levels however, the former Bayern Munich man is an engine in midfield and still has a terrific range of passing and reading of the game - something Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp will know all about from facing him during his time as Borussia Dortmund manager.

Juan Mata

Juan Mata

It is almost an inevitability that poor Juan Mata will part ways with Jose Mourinho and United this summer, with Jose having ousted the Spaniard drastically during his tenure as Chelsea manager - despite Mata winning the Player of the Season award only the year before.

One of the Red Devil’s most consistent yet under-rated performers of the past seasons, Mata has been linked with a move to the other side of merseyside to join Ronald Koeman at Goodison Park, however the former Valencia playmaker could be the perfect match for Jurgen Klopp and Anfield instead as Liverpool search to add creativity to their lacklustre central midfield.

Jesse Lingard

LingardFPL

Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial received most of the plaudits last season for being the stand-out stars in an otherwise again disappointing campaign, young Jesse Lingard may just feel hard done by for not reaping such praise despite having an equally fantastic season.

Creative, positive and with an eye for goal, the Englishman notched 6 goals in all competitions, but more importantly represented the hunger and desire of United’s youth players to still succeed - something which Louis Van Gaal built upon throughout the season to help secure the FA Cup, a tournament in which Lingard scored a brilliant winner during extra-time.

Liverpool have let English youth go this summer in Jordan Ibe and Jerome Sinclair, so maybe it is time to bring some in?
