The Reds were thought to have a deal for the Brazilian in the bag following the Russian giants’ decision to transfer list their entire first-team squad.
But, Spurs have now waded into the battle and are ready to offer the skillful attacker an alternative option.
It’s thought that Andre Villas-Boas is willing to match Liverpool’s offer – believed to be in the region of £30m – and offer him regular first-team football.
Although Tottenham are also without Champions League football, they are hopeful that the lure of life in London may give them the upper hand over their rivals.
Liverpool are still confident that a deal can be done, with reports in Russia claiming that the player himself has turned down the opportunity to join Zenit Saint-Petersburg to move to Anfield.
Tottenham are long-term admirers of Willian, and almost secured his signature last year.
An agreement could not be reached with his then club Shakhtar Donetsk, who eventually sold him to Anzhi in January.
Should Tottenham seal the deal, it would raise further doubts about Gareth Bale’s future, with AVB’s total spent this summer reaching the £90m mark.
Can Tottenham beat Liverpool to Willian? And if so does it mean Gareth Bale is leaving?
